The deadlatch is designed to be used with various exit trim, such as a paddle handle. When the handle is operated the latch bolt will retract thereby allowing the door to be opened. However the "dead latching" facility means that when the door is closed, nothing can be inserted into the gap between the door and frame to force the latch bolt and thereby allow unauthorised entry.
